Why do recipes require paraffin wax as an ingredient?

Post by Breezey Breezey on Mon Dec 20, 2010 12:36 am

Paraffin wax

  • [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
  • Coatings for waxed paper or cloth
  • Food-grade paraffin wax:

    • Shiny coating used in [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]-making; although edible, it is nondigestible, passing right through the body without being broken down
    • Coating for many kinds of hard [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], like [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
    • Sealant for jars, cans, and bottles
    • Chewing gum additive

Now, WHY would anyone want to EAT that? It can't be good for you.

Hmmmm.... see what YOU think.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

The more I read, the less I understand why anyone would use that in foods. Those peanut butter balls... some recipes actually have paraffin wax as an ingredient to be melted with the chocolate. I don't think I'll be doing that!

we used to have a kerosine heater, it smelled awful and killed the plants .
thanks for the link, very interesting, even if i do not understand most of it !!

The only thing I understand is wax is not edible! WHY would I want to eat it? I just can't see it being healthy to eat wax in foods or on foods. I know most apples are wax coated. Not sure how much you actually eat, but think that can't be good on a regular basis, either.

Breezey, according to your first post, it is edible; it's just not digestible. The same is true with fiber, which is an important part of our diets.

The only thing I remember it being used for is in canning (as in mason jars).

I have been seeing recipes that say to mix paraffin wax with the chocolate and melt them together to dip peanut butter balls in.

I think edible is all in the way you look at it... would you eat wax? lol

I have eaten wax. Don't you remember those little wax bottles with the juice in them? Or the wax lips?

Wax bottles with juice... you opened them and drank the juice, but not eat the wax. lol I never had them, but my kids have. I'd never find it okay for them to eat the wax. Who eats wax lips? They may have a deficiency of some sort. lol
