Starting a thread to give you a
"Totally Useless Fact Of The Day"
(might come in handy playing Trivial Pursuit!) LOL
Here is today's useless fact:

In the blockbuster hit, E.T., the Extra Terrestrial (1982), Harrison
Ford was cast as the school principal, but his only scene was cut.
Director Steven Spielberg decided his presence in the film would be
too distracting. Ford's wife Melissa Mathison wrote E.T.'s screenplay.

I'm trying to think of another useless fact, but I can't come up with anything!
Okay, here's one: The song title, Mr. Mojo Risin", by the Doors, is an anagram of Jim Morrison's name.

Today's useless fact:
In India it is perfectly proper for men to wear pajamas in public.
Pajamas are accepted as standard daytime wearing apparel.

But NOT in the United States, you got that, guys!?

(By the way, cool bit of intormation Tater! Thanks!)

See! ... You guys know some useless facts! LOL
Great additions! I did not know all of that!
Hey, who has that picture of the kitten being held up at gun point?
I lost it. Could have used it here:
The robbery phrase "Hands Up" originated in British Columbia. Bill
Miner, an American known as the Gentleman Bandit, is said to have
first used the phrase while robbing a Canadian Pacific Railways
train in Mission Junction, British Columbia in 1904.
Edit:
And thanks to Breezey's quick fingers ... here's a hold up:

One charming St. Valentine's Day tradition from long ago
was to pick a dandelion that had gone to seed. The person
would then take a deep breath and blow the seeds into the wind.
He or she would then count the seeds that remained on the stem.
That was supposedly the number of children they would have.

LOL - Tater, THAT is inflation!
Guess my piggy bank is an investment, after all!
    Another usless bit of info:
If you have three quarters, four dimes, and four pennies,
you have $1.19. You also have the largest amount of money
in U.S. coins without being able to make change for a dollar.

According to 1903 issue of "The Old Farmers' Almanac," the best time
of the day to select a new pair of shoes is in the afternoon, when
the exercise of the day has stretched the muscles to their largest extent.

The word "combine" (like the farm machine)
and the word "combine" (as in "to mix up")
are spelt the same, but the first one separates stuff,
and the second one mixes stuff back together.

A full moon rarely shows up on Halloween,
although Halloween is often associated with full moons.
Full moons on Halloween over the past century have
    occurred in 1925, 1944, 1955, and 1974. The next
full moon on October 31st wil occur in 2020.
See you then! Let's "Trick or Treat" together!

    Here's some more useless information:
During the middle ages, only men wore diamonds, as a symbol of their
courage and virility. However, since 1477, when Archduke Maximilian
of Austria gave a diamond ring to Mary of Burgundy, diamonds have
been the gem of choice for men who wanted to melt a woman's heart.

In the Middle Ages, one Valentine's Day custom was for young men and
women to draw names from a bowl to see who their valentines would be.
They would then wear these names on their sleeves for one week.
"To wear your heart on your sleeve" now means that it is easy for other
people to know how you are feeling.

"Jerkwater" is a railroad term. Until about fifty years ago,
most trains were pulled by thirsty steam engines that needed
to refill their boilers from water towers next to the tracks.
But some towns were so small and inconsequential that they lacked a water tower.
When trains stopped in those places, the crew had to find a nearby stream or well and,
bucket-brigade style, "jerk" the water to the train.
Those little dots on the map became known as jerkwater towns.

"Old Folks at Home", also known by the words of its first line, "(Way Down Upon the) Swanee River", is a song written in 1851 by composer [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], to be performed by the New York performing troupe Christy's Minstrels. The name of [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.],the troupe's leader, appears on early printings of the music as thesong's creator, as shown in the illustration; Christy had paid Fosterto be credited, something Foster himself had suggested. Though Fosterlater regretted this, the deal stood. It has been the official statesong of Florida since 1935.[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
According to legend[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.],Foster had most of the lyrics in place but was casting about to give aname to the river of the opening line and asked his brother to suggestone. The first suggestion was "[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]" of [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], which, despite fitting the melody perfectly, Foster rejected. The second suggestion was "[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]" of [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], to which Foster said, "Oh pshaw! I won't have that." His brother then consulted an atlas and called out "[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]!". Foster immediately wrote it in (misspelling it "Swanee" to fit the melody[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]), saying "That's it exactly!". Foster himself never saw the [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] or even visited Florida, but the popularity of the song singlehandedly started a major [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] movement to Florida to see the river, as travelers from the [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] in particular flocked to the region.

In medieval times, thunderstorms were believed by some to be the work of demons.
So when it stormed, bell ringers would go up into the bell towers to ring
the consecrated bells in an effort to stop the storm.
This practice didn't always work out well for the bell ringer.

According to folklore, there are a number of ways to protect yourself from vampires, including the ever-popular wearing of garlic or a religious symbol. You can slow a vampire down by giving him something to do, like pick up poppy seeds or unravel a net. (They're quite compulsive.) Cross water and he can't follow. If you can find the body, give it a bottle of whiskey or food so it doesn't have to travel. If that doesn't work, either shoot the corpse (may require a silver bullet) or drive a stake through the heart.
And remember, the vampire won't enter your dwelling unless invited.

(Thought this one was of particular interest. LOL)
According to legend, if a hare crosses a person's path as he starts out on a journey,
the trip will be unlucky and it's best to return home and start again.
If a pregnant woman sees a hare, her child may be born with a hare-lip.
If a hare runs down the main street of a town, it foretells a fire.
Cornish legend says that girls who die of grief after being rejected
by a lover turn into white hares and haunt their former beaus.

    Bunny,

Silver is anathma to WEREWOLVES; not Vampires... [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
    Just so we know...

To prevent evil spirits from entering the bodies of their male children,
    parents dressed them in blue.
Blue was chosen because it's the color of the sky
and was therefore associated with heavenly spirits.
Girls weren't dressed in blue, apparently because people didn't think
that evil spirits would bother with them.
(Go figure, huh? ... ROTFL ... I'm kidding, I'm kidding!)
Eventually, however, girls did get their own color: pink.
Pink was chosen because of an old English legend
which said that girls were born inside of pink roses.
    (Awwww, isn't that sweet?)

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
Over the years, various structural changes and general wear and tear left the house in dire need of restoration. In 1937, Philadelphia [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] offered up to $25,000 for the restoration of the house and commissioned historical architect [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] to do the work. Original elements were kept wherever possible. Otherwise, materials from demolished period homes were used. A new structure was added in the rear, made from period bricks. The front stairway and dormer were entirely replaced. The front doorway was moved to the opposite corner, and a new window was installed.

The original IBM-PCs, that had hard drives, referred to the hard drives as Winchester drives.
This is due to the fact that the original Winchester drive had a model number of 3030.
This is, of course, a Winchester firearm.

I think this is the longest list of useless facts I have ever seen on this site. One more useless fact of the day , off the far tip of the Island of Lanai is a ship wreck, and they call the beach, shipwreck beach. Very Happy

The last witch in Ireland was supposedly Dame Alice Kytler,
born in Kilkenny in 1280. All four of her husbands died,
and she was accused of poisioning them.
Today you can dine at Kytler's Inn in Kilkenny, which operates in her old home.

According to one rather obscure Irish legend,
a ringing in your ears means a deceased friend stuck in Purgatory is ringing a bell
to ask for you to pray for him/her.

In olden days, a pig was often allowed to live in the house with the family on an Irish farm.
He (or she) was commonly referred to as "the gentleman who pays the rent."

No one knows where the expression "to grin like a Cheshire cat" originated,
    but it wasn't with Carroll.
The Cheshire cat is a well-known character in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland,
but the expression, meaning a sneering smile that shows the gums,
existed long before he wrote the book. There is no such breed of cat.
