Massive Dust Storm Descends On Phoenix!

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
from [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] on [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].

While dust storms might not be a new occurrence for Arizona natives, a massive one that recently descended on Phoenix has been captured in amazing video footage. The above video of the storm was captured by Mike Olbinski, who says that despite living in Phoenix for 35 years, he has never seen anything like this storm. The storm halted flights and knocked out power for more than 8,000 people as it rolled through. This type of dust storm is being described as a “haboob“, which aside from being fun to say (we’re adults, we swear), is a word of Arabic origins that means a violent and oppressive wind blowing in summer, particularly with regard to bringing sand from the desert.

Hi Buuny!
I have lived here almost! my entire! life -
(since just before my 13th B-day) and the news coverage
of that [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] dust storm was the FIRST TIME! I
EVER heard that silly word.
They lie. The Jackass-On-The-News said, - AND I QUOTE -
"as we like to call them here"
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] !
WHO ?
Maybe the bozos in the weather department there...
NO ONE else.
IThat "storm" was NOT! a good time - plus... MANY! other locations -
some not-that-far-from-Phoenix
got RAIN! in the wake of the DUST STORM... not us.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
I'm going with this translation: "Haboob" = "Have Boob?"
and the answer is 'YES...but only on Channel 15. '

You keep us laughing. (In a GOOD way!)
With all that dust and some rain ... it should have been a great time to make some mud pies! rollonfloor

Bunny, [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
It was a lulu of a dust storm - EVERYthing! in this house
is GRITTY!. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
I can remember others like it - ('as-bad-as')
BUT... that may be because in those I remember
we were driving! at the time... NOT a good idea.
(We were surprised by it - not "out" on purpose.)
In case (God forbid) you're ever in one...

PULL OFF THE ROAD - STOP MOVING and
DO NOT -repeat- NOT! TURN OFF YOUR LIGHTS.

... FYI. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

There was a freak dust storm where I went to college one year ... red dust ... the whole sky turned red in the middle of the day. Looked like something from a science-fiction movie about Mars. VERY strange. Never experienced anything like that!

Not! a good time.
And every-f'ing-thing is COVERED in fine grit!

No, the [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] heat ! is a fact - 3 months of the year.
This high is unusual - thus the headlines. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
However... IMO... 9 months of the year - the weather is
pretty-near PERFECT... thus the tourists. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
The dust- [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]-storms are rare. Unlike the 6-foot blanket of
freezing! common to your neck of th woods - and a brief 6-7 day
interval the residents there refer to as "summer".
I meet a LOT of people - here- from "there" - from after Labor Day
until mid-June. Here. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
This "weather" sucks! It is HOT! - even for "here"... and it used to be
a "dry" heat, Now .. we "enjoy" a period of not-so-much - thanks to the
advent of "El Nino" and something the weather-types refer to as the
"Monsoon Season". UGH. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] I refer to it as "the Back-East syndrome";
muggy, HOT! and miserable.

We spent a week at the Playboy Club on Lake Geneva... every day at
4:00 p.m to 4:15 p.m. (like clockwork) it rained - a nice steady warm-ish
rain - no raging WIND! or bellowing thunder - just rain.
I was informed by the woman who ran the stables that Wisconsin was
experiencing a drought.
Personally, I thought it was lovely! [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

We have wonderful, GLORIOUS rainstorms... but we rarely get
'just rain'... pitter-patter, stroll-in-it, lovely rain.
Wisconsin was a wonderful break for us. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
I did miss mountains, though.

P.S.
Wisconsinites apparently have NO IDEA ! what a "drought" is. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Are you considered to be a tourist area? I once lived in a tourist area, but it wasn't too bad... unless you needed to buy things. lol

I couldn't POSSIBLY leave here! What would I DO with my snow shovels?! lol

Your snow shovels... ?
You could :
A. Bring them along and exhibit them here as a curiosity...
B. Donate them to the people who will still be living there...
C Set fire! to them at your next BBQ here...
D. Throw them in the dumpster.
Plus -
If you become homesick for "frozen"... you can visit
the high country here.
We have MOUNTAINS - with and SNOW and ICE and all
the comforts of (your) home... except constant rain.

The South Rim of the Grand Canyon is ALWAYS cold. Always.
(I think.)

Not so far away is Prescott - (I love! Prescott...!)
Yup - ALSO a "tourist trap" ; their "Whiskey Row" is legendary! [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
(ALL of Arizona is a tourist trap - because of the weather.)
They have SEASONS! - with snow and cool nights in the summer...
and they have rain.
That (rain) you will very likely miss.
(I remember rain, very fondly. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.])

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] Nope. Not my first rodeo - or dust storm.
I expect the end of th world to have a lot!
more fanfare - and the odd Angel or two, maybe.
We had no idea! it was that big intil much! later...
