Would you care if organic foods no longer existed?

Post by Breezey Breezey on Thu May 24, 2012 11:02 am

Over the past 15 years or so, a collection of five giant biotech corporations -- Monsanto, Syngenta, Bayer, Dow and DuPont -- have bought up more than 200 other companies, allowing them to dominate access to seeds.
The takeover has been so dramatic that it is becoming difficult for farmers to find alternatives. As a result, in the U.S., 90 percent of soybeans are genetically-modified, and many conventional farmers have trouble obtaining non-genetically modified seeds.

Organic seeds are still available for home gardeners and smaller farms, but the big companies and their big farms with their contaminated ''food'' have taken over.
It is also getting increasingly harder to grow pure food as airborne gm seeds contaminate the organic food. Sad

What Monsanto has done is absolutely criminal, in my mind, but it has been upheld in the courts over and over again. They sue any small farmer who uses his own corn seed for his next crop, if it has been contaminated with their patented gene (which makes their corn seed resistant to Roundup weed killer). The problem is, any farm which is nearby another farm using the resistant seed will undoubtedly be cross pollinated, and Monsanto invariable ends up bankrupting the farmer and taking over his land.

Is this another case of nobody actually DOing something about it... so it just happens?
What happened to laws about monopolizing?
AND... where are all the people who (I would think) should want to stop crap food from taking over?

Breezey,it is very hard to win over the super rich and powerful, and I do believe our government ,yours, mine and all the rest of them are in on it .The best we can do is suport local and organic farmers markets.
ps there is more and more support for organic that they are becoming cheaper and big supermarkets now have an organic section. That how ever makes me wonder if the super market chains grow their own, just HOW organic would it be ?

Does it make a difference to only buy heirloom and organic seeds and plants?
I have been to two different stores. Each store had people who looked at me like I was nuts when I asked where the heirloom plants were... but one store had quite a selection of heirloom seeds.

I have to wonder when people stopped caring what went into their bodies...

There are a number of places on line you can get organic seeds from, and of course ,once you grow the stuff, keep seeds for next time.
I can just see your garden bursting with yummy, healthy delicious edibles !

There is a local company, Burbee Seeds, that I believe have a lot of heirloom seeds, and I think they still have a catalog you can order from, if not online.

Breezey, I know you don't like genetically modifed seeds, or even hybrids if I remember correctly, do heirlooms are definitely the way to go. They are the seeds for the plants your grandparents and great grandparents grew. No tasteless tomatoes that ship well, no bland apples that store for long periods of time, no corn that is resistant to weed killer.

shipping well, storing well and weed killer can't kill... there's problems here! I left a crappy apple in the pantry for a month and it still looked the same. Problem is... it shouldn't have!

Too many things are sneaking up on people and still... many don't even care.

So, WE make a difference. Is there some place to find others making a difference and start working together?

Would I (personally) care? No.
Would I care that something else had disappeared
due to greed and lack of 'give-a-... darn'? Yes.

Four companies running everyone else out and supplying what many would rather not have. To me, it's a monopoly and possibly something they all worked together on....
Money is talking again. Where's the laws to protect those who don't have big bucks to back them up?

Um... unless conspiracy to ... do 'something' (?) ... price-fixing, maybe? ...
I doubt there are any laws against it.
