What are your thoughts on this education quote?

Post by Breezey Breezey on Fri Sep 12, 2014 9:32 am

Education rears disciples, imitators, and routinists, not pioneers of new ideas and creative geniuses. The schools are not nurseries of progress and improvement, but conservatories of tradition and unvarying modes of thought.

Trying again....

Education rears disciples, imitators, and routinists, not pioneers of new ideas and creative geniuses. . . . The mark of the creative mind is that it defies a part of what it has learned or, at least, adds something new to it.
Innovators and creative geniuses cannot be reared in schools. They are precisely the men who defy what the school has taught them.

Hmmm! Im not sure I agree. I guess that depends on the school. Over here they've just introduced (another) new type of school. This provides an alternative approach geared on practical skills which should help. As you know there are many innovative people over here and apprenticeships are making a comeback after near extinction when Margaret Thatcher closed most of our manufacturing industry. I found my time in apprentice school priceless in promoting innovative thought.

There are many creative subjects taught in schools, we learned art, pottery, woodwork, metalwork, rural science (gardening), technical drawing, and this provided a firm foundation on which to build. We were always taught to question, and consider carefully how to achieve any task undertaken.

School educates, but it should also enthuse and inspire.

To a certain extent I agree. After all, you can't possibly learn how to do something that hasn't yet been done, from other people. How can they teach you to something that has never been done? If they new how to do it, they would have done it already.

Art teachers seem to have a way with telling people what to draw, what colors can and can't be used.... some seem to take over and change the whole picture.. then making that picture more theirs than the student's.
I think, most times, when teaching... those teachers already have preconceived ways and ideas of how things should be... what art is, what music is... what politics are, etc... and whether intentional or not... it shows and  is part of teachings.

A good teacher is always looking to inspire, and a good pupil is always looking for inspiration. A good teacher lays the foundations on which the good pupil builds. Even with new concepts there are parallels and techniques which can be helpful. Look at philosophy, the techniques can be applied to a multitude of applications.
