This link gives information for those (like me) who don't have much of a clue.
For some reason... this printer bothers me...

I don't know a lot about it, but I really get the impression that it's not nearly as amazing as many seem to think it is. In reality, it isn't a printer at all, at least not what we think of as a printer. It's more like a computer aided manufacturing system. Think of a computer assisted drafting program (like AutoCad) connected to a fabricator. It uses a three dimensional computer model to shape a piece of metal (or plastic) into a desired form.

3-D printing is somewhat of a misnomer. It should be called something like Computer Assisted Manufacturing.

Seems to me I may have to read more and figure it out, but I think your answer here gives me a lot better idea of what it is. Thank you, Tater. give a hug

It really isn't printing. It's computer controlled fabrication. They aren't printing things in 3-D, they are manufacturing things using existing materials, with the aid of a 3-D computer model.

I get that. It just bothers me the things that can be made. I guess I'm seeing the downside... what people will find a way to use for wrong things...negative.

High-Quality 3D-Printed Face Making the Rounds

3D Printing News - Printed Face
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

A popular 3D-print doing the rounds on reddit today is this 3D-scan and print of the face of the inventor of the Holobuild Scanning System. This is not a mold, it is printed out of the printer in the colour shown and with all of the texture and skin as it appears. Printed on a ZPrinter 650, which costs approximately $65,000 with starting materials, don’t expect to see this level of quality in the near future with your household printers. Still, it is taste of possible things to come. Scary or revolutionary stuff, it’s your call. Continue reading 3D Printing Daily News – July 18th, 2013
