Is the customer always right?

Post by Breezey Breezey on Wed Oct 21, 2015 9:53 am

Even at the expense of a worker's feelings? Is it the normal to expect workers to take abusive words and put downs because the customer is always right?

The customer isn't always right, especially when he's an a**hole.

I don't think I'd do well with shutting my mouth and letting a "customer" be verbally abusive.. insults, swearing, whatever...

When I was younger.. I probably would have let the customer get away with it.. but not now. I would not be abusive back but I would certainly tell them that I think their conduct is NOT appropriate and very rude.

The problem there is you'd most likely lose  your job. I find it wrong to expect anyone to be verbally abused and to have to stand there and listen to it all without being nasty back.

It is extremely WRONG.. If I was working for a boss that allowed that kind of behaviour, I would find another job.

I believe customers should have the right to be treated fairly and with integrity and honesty (i.e; no bait and switch, sale prices should be honored, rain-checks given for out of stock items, etc).

However, they DO NOT have the right to mistreat or verbally abuse the staff. When that occurs, management should ask them to leave. If they don't, they risk losing the respect of their employees, and once that happens, they lose the ability to manage effectively.
