There's always that one person who reminds you that you best get your act together.. and let's you know that you should be Christmas shopping!!! lol..

HO HO HO... I better go.. and get my act together.

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas.. toys in every store.. but the prettiest sight you'll see, is the holly that will be, on your own front door. (-:

Would love to see them.. Bring on the snow. We are fast approaching our Summer which starts on December 1.. the heat is already here with places already reaching 45 degrees celcius today and on high fire alert.. with fires already raging in parts. This is unheard of so early in the year. Luckily we are only expecting about 30 with a cool change in the early arvo.

It's odd to think of any place having summer when winter is coming here.
Yet.. it's been really odd... not too bad cold wise.

Re: Christmas Countdown

Post by Breezey Breezey on Sun Nov 29, 2015 6:36 am

Black Friday is the day following Thanksgiving Day in the United States (the fourth Thursday of November). Since at least the 1930s, it has been regarded as the beginning of the Christmas shopping season in the US, and most major retailers open very early (and more recently during overnight hours) and offer promotional sales. Black Friday is not an official holiday, but California and some other states observe "The Day After Thanksgiving" as a holiday for state government employees, sometimes in lieu of another federal holiday such as Columbus Day.[2] Many non-retail employees and schools have both Thanksgiving and the following Friday off, which, along with the following regular weekend, makes it a four-day weekend, thereby increasing the number of potential shoppers. It has routinely been the busiest shopping day of the year since 2005,[3] although news reports, which at that time were inaccurate,[4] have described it as the busiest shopping day of the year for a much longer period of time.[5] Similar stories resurface year upon year at this time, portraying hysteria and shortage of stock, creating a state of positive feedback.

For many years, it was common for retailers to open at 6:00 a.m., but in the late 2000s many had crept to 5:00 or 4:00. This was taken to a new extreme in 2011, when several retailers (including Target, Kohl's, Macy's, Best Buy, and Bealls[11]) opened at midnight for the first time.[12] In 2012, Walmart and several other retailers announced that they would open most of their stores at 8:00 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day, prompting calls for a walkout among some workers.[13] In 2014 stores such as JCPenney, Best Buy, and Radio Shack opened at 5:00 PM on Thanksgiving Day while stores such as Target, Walmart, Belk, and Sears opened at 6:00 PM on Thanksgiving Day.[14][15] Three states, Rhode Island, Maine, and Massachusetts, prohibit large supermarkets, big box stores, and department stores from opening on Thanksgiving, due to blue laws.[16][17]
There have been reports of violence occurring between shoppers on Black Friday. Since 2006, there have been 7 reported deaths and 98 injuries throughout the United States.[18] It is common for prospective shoppers to camp out over the Thanksgiving holiday in an effort to secure a place in front of the line and thus a better chance at getting desired items. This poses a significant safety risk (such as the use of propane and generators in the most elaborate cases, and in general, the blocking of emergency access and fire lanes, causing at least one city to ban the practice.)[19]

Re: Christmas Countdown

Post by P on Sun Nov 29, 2015 7:13 am

Just to add:

The name Black Friday comes from the accounting aspects where shops move from the red and into the black covering their costs for the year and moving into a trading profit.

Last year saw the introduction of Black Friday on a wide front over here to encourage shoppers through the door by offering a small number of give away loss leaders. This resulted in fights and near riot situations. Some chains have decided not to repeat the mistake and have spread encouragement on a less focused timeline.

Perhaps this will thin the crowds during the January sales (although I somehow doubt it!) where people like me can cautiously venture out and risk their lives for a few essentials.

No deal is worth fighting, being rude, etc..
I don't care if I have to pay more... I  still want to be able to look at myself in the mirror and know I didn't have to become nasty to save a dollar.

I don't need a computer... something just isn't right with the monitor.. it keeps turning off. Trying to figure if I need new cords or what...

Re: Christmas Countdown

Post by lorry p on Sun Nov 29, 2015 6:23 pm

So that is what Black Friday is about.. Sounds like madness to me. In our little town with a population of around 15,000.. more people can be seen shopping every Thursday.. market day.. when the cow cockies come to town to buy and sell their cattle. There is no desperate mad rush of extra people at Christmas time. I will say that in the bigger cities it is a different story. Glad I don't live with people sheep.

Re: Christmas Countdown

Post by P on Mon Nov 30, 2015 2:07 pm

It's just a cunning ploy so that the hotels don't have to reprint the menus.

day 1: get what your given (unless you specified 3months ago when you booked)
day 2: Christmas Eve menu (including Christmas pud)
day 3: Christmas Day menu (including turkey & new potatoes)
day 4: Boxing Day menu (including roast beef & Yorkshire pud)
day 5: New Years Eve menu (including lamb & mint sauce)
day 6: New Years Day menu (what ever's left from the week before)
Day 7: cases 5.30am breakfast 6.30am depart 7.15am (day 1 for next lot)

always soup (related to previous days main course)
always Chefs special (in theory something always sounds nice you would like, always guaranteed to disappoint)
always assorted icecream/jelly and icecream
always cheese and biscuits

This all starts about October when the Christmas decorations go up and last years menus come out of storage!

The hotel may show willing and give a small gift:
for her, a tea towel with the hotel motif  (did NOT go down well with the ladies)
for him, a 20 piece jigsaw with the hotel motif (or 19 pieces if you're unlucky)
Alternatively:
A unisex key fob and luggage label with the hotel motif.

The various methods people find to demonstrate their contempt with such tacky gifts are truely inspiring. However it does not prevent senile grannies from leaving over generous tips to compensate exploited and underpaid employees who have singularly provided a sub standard service throughout the "Christmas" weeks holiday.

Do I sound cynical?  Oops, was that a question in the wrong section.......
