Have you ever been surprised by the original versions of fairy tales?

Post by Breezey Breezey on Mon Feb 15, 2016 8:44 am

"These stories aren’t your happy endings but rather sometimes gruesome and shocking tales. Fairy tales used to be stories aimed at both adult and child alike and the grown-up themes they portray is good evidence of that. We dug deep with this list to find where our common stories come from and what the original dark (very dark) stories really were. Hold on tight as we dive into these 25 Dark and Disturbing Original Versions Of Children’s Fairy Tales."

Ugh, I just read the first story listed about Sleeping Beauty, and I don't think I want to read the rest of them!

Some of the more familiar versions are scary enough!

The Wizard of Oz is an example of a "Children's" story that scared the heck out of me when I was a kid. Flying monkeys and trees that had arms to grab you? WTF?

I agree with you completely and have to wonder how many are written with children in mind and how many are really for adults. I found that first one to be in very poor taste and would never tell a child about it.
The Wizard of Oz... never was one I liked much.

What about Alice in Wonderland? The whole thing seems like some kind of hallucinogenic trip!
Magic mushrooms, anyone?

Alice in Wonderland... never really knew that one as a child. Actually, I kind of liked it. lol (If that's how it really is) It took some imagination, not just taking all the negatives of life and making a horrid story.

I got brave and read some more. None seem to be as bad as the first one. A few odd things that make a person wonder, but not nearly as upsetting as Sleeping Beauty.. which reminds me more of adult crap.

Yeah, the first one, I wouldn't even recommend for adults.

Why do you suppose some people have a need to write things like that and others the need to read it?

I always thought even the more familiar version of Red Riding Hood was quite disturbing as it is!

I think maybe, if we gave more thought to a few others, we'd wonder more than we do. lol

Goldilocks and the Three Bears
Goldilocks and the Three Bears
rounds.com / Via Rounds.com
In a 1837 version of ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’, Goldilocks doesn’t escape out of the house unharmed. Instead, she is simply torn apart and eaten by the bear clan. And that’s what you get for breaking and entering.

Well! I think it's maybe good to start our own fairy tales?

Could we just leave it at that if they only get really bad anyway?

So...anyone watch the series "Once Upon a Time" ?
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
Once Upon a Time is an American fairy tale dramatic series that premiered on October 23, 2011, on ABC. The show takes place in the fictional seaside town of Storybrooke, Maine, whose residents are characters from various fairy tales transported to the "real world" town and robbed of their real memories by a powerful curse. Episodes typically feature a primary storyline in Storybrooke, as well as a secondary storyline from another point in a character's life before the curse was enacted. The show airs Sundays at 8:00 pm ET/7:00 pm CT.[2]

It borrows elements and characters from Disney films and popular Western fairy tales, including Jack and the Beanstalk, Hansel and Gretel, Little Red Riding Hood, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, The Wizard of Oz, Pinocchio, Fantasia, Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, Sleeping Beauty, 101 Dalmatians, The Sword in the Stone, Robin Hood, The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Hercules, Mulan, Tangled, Brave, and Frozen.

We have Coronation Street and East Enders, will that do? I haven't a clue what they're about (if anything), I've never watched any of it.

Are they related to fairy tales?
