Malware delivered by Yahoo, Fox, Google ads

Post by Breezey Breezey on Fri Apr 30, 2010 3:13 pm

I thought this might be interesting to read, since "Chief" is telling members from a certain hosting that this is the cause of problems... but also to let people know what is going on.

These charts show incidences of malware
distributed by a number of ad delivery platforms over a six-day period
last month that were detected by Avast. Yahoo and Fox have the highest
counts.

Very interesting article, and I highly recommend that everybody read it.

I find this particular line quite intriguing:

"Users don't need to click on anything to get infected; a computer becomes infected after the ad is loaded by the browser, Avast said."

To me, that seems to indicate that adblocker should help prevent this malware from infecting your computer, since it prevents the ad from loading.
It's also another reason to consider subscribing to one of the more reliable internet security/virus/malware/spyware protection services. Personally, I have been using Norton 360 from Symantic, and I have encountered no problems whatsoever with malware/spyware/viruses as of yet.

That's good advice Tater. Between my adblock and anti virus, I haven't had any problems.

Yo Dude, does this sound familiar, in reference to Yahoo's actions or lack thereof in combating this problem?

"Yahoo is deeply committed to providing a high-quality experience for users, advertisers, and publishers. We expect our members to support and abide by our standards and guidelines around acceptable ad content and behavior," the statement said. "On the rare occasion that an ad is served that is in conflict with our expectations and guidelines we take action to remove it as quickly as possible."

Rare occasion, huh?

According to the article, their ads are the worst offenders, far and away! (The dark blue line that spikes WAY higher than all the others is Yahoo's ad server!)

Tater... I see your point. lol

Lefora blamed users for those problems. Accused me and another forum member of passing those viruses and Chief is now eating his words.

Chief recently accused another forum of passing the virus around and then found out once again... it was ads he allowed on Lefora. lol Two for two! He's on a roll now! [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Bringing this to the top again so people understand... you don't always have to click on an ad to have it load and pass a virus.

Re: Malware delivered by Yahoo, Fox, Google ads

Post by Guest on Tue Jan 03, 2012 1:41 am

I, too, have Norton 360 and ran a quick scan every day, and it would clean 20 to 40 light risks a day. I just switched to Chrome browser, and now when I run Norton every day, I get O - none!

But since taking the newest Yahoo mail, I am getting many spams every day in the folder and a couple of them sneak in my imbox using my name. I'm going to post a Q in answers and see if anyone else has this going on. I run the full system scan once a week to keep things cleaned up.

Is there a free download for ad blocks? I'm sick of all the ads on all sites.
Thank you.

Here is a link for Adblock plus...

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
If you look towards the bottom, right corner, there are links and one is for Chrome.

FYI.. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
I have AdBlock and I seldom have malware problems...
Between it and Microsoft's 'Defender' things go very well. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

I am very happy ! with Firefox, thankyouverymuch. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
Chrome is too much and I don't need "all that". It is
an excellent browser - I just don't need all that "stuff".
Firefox is lightweight and allows me to trim out anything
I don't find useful.

Daisy, I believe the spam in Yahoo mail is due to how Yahoo now has their mail set up. I believe you have to change an option of allowing Yahoo to share your emails with a third party (advertisers).

some things of interest..

Hey P, some things never change and the way Yahoo will try to screw you over, sell you out, spam you, etc... is never going to change.
