Is this mint? (in your opinion)

Post by Breezey Breezey on Fri Jun 04, 2010 7:28 pm

If so, would it be spearmint or peppermint?

I think mint leaves edges are smoother than that. If you tear a piece of a leaf off it, does it smell like mint?

Does it look like this? (I can't quite tell from the pics, but the color seems to be off)

It has a mint smell to it, but some here say it stinks. lol

It seems a lot darker than the one you posted and the leaves seem to be more jagged. Does that make sense? [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

I thought that it looked darker and more jagged too. There are many varieties of mint though, and oregano, basil, and several other herbs are closely related to mint.

It spreads like a damn weed! It's hard to get all the roots that try to take over my veggie garden. I dislike it expanding everywhere... even along side the house. AND... it comes back every year.

If it spreads like a weed, and you didn't plant it, it probably is one.

Hmongs lived here before us and had many things growing. It was in the veggie garden, but seems to spread more every year. There are other plants I can't identify too.

Here is what I have found so far...
How To Grow Mint Herb

Mint
There are nearly a thousand varieties of mint, but only
six or
so are worth cultivating. They are easy to grow in both
shade
and sun with an require very little maintenance needed.

MINT QUICK GUIDE
Mint Folklore
Click
here

Latin Name
Mentha spicata (garden / spearmint)
Mentha pulegium (Pennyroyal)~
Mentha pipperata (peppermint)
Type
Edible flowering herb.
Site and Soil
Most soils, partial shade or full sun.
Plant to Harvest Time
3 months

Their problem is that they grow too
well! If
left to their own devices, they will rapidly take over
your
garden. Mints were used by the Greeks and Romans both
for flavouring food and
as a medicine. Click folklore (right) for some of the
myths surrounding mint.http://www.gardenaction.co.uk/fruit_veg_diary/fruit_veg_mini_project_january_3_mint.asp#mint_where

After hours of Tater and I searching and debating, the mystery is solved.

Based on this section of your pic

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

and looking at mine, I would say yes.

It seems lighter/paler... something? than what I grow,
but at the same time , Tater's pic is much brighter green
than mine... mine is more of a "forest" green.

The leaves look the same to me.
I don't know what kind yours is; I don't know what kind MINE is! [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

The pics of yours are very pretty!
It will overrun EVERYthing! won't it? Yup. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
I just pull mine up until it's a managable sized patch again. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Okay... I have been pulling up roots and plants and finding these are NOT a good thing to have near a house! The roots are growing into and crevice and hole they can find and it's taking a lot of prying to get them out. The advice about planting mint in pots is really good.
