Did you know that in the 1800's Hungarian peasants used to cover up all the mirrors in their houses so their small children wouldn't accidentally kill themselves with a reflected "evil eye?"

"Up the River" or "Up the creek without a paddle" is derived from Penology.

The New York city jail is on Riker's Island. When convicted, prisoners would be shipped to the famous "Sing-Sing" prison, otherwise known as the NY State Prison art Ossining, NY - up river 30 miles from Riker's Island.

Wikipedia says: "The use of the expression "up the river" to mean "in prison" derives from the practice of sentencing people convicted in New York City to serve their prison terms in Sing Sing, which is literally "up the Hudson River" from the city. Its use dates from 1891."

There are plans to convert the original 1825 cell block into a prison museum. There are approximately 1700 maximum security prisoners housed there - in newer cell blocks.

When the first escalator, or "inclined elevator," was installed in the department store Harrod's in London (near the turn of the century), brandy was served to passengers who felt faint.

Because we all know that watching a drunk navigate an escalator is better than watching a barrel full of monkeys!

S.H.I.T. Stands for Ship HI In Transit Came from The Roman Empire days They used to put the human waste in barrells & ship out to sea and dump it. It was stowed in the lower part of ships but when it was real hot it stunk bad & would even expand & blow up the barrells thus they wanted then stored on the upper deck!

During World War II, sales of the soft drink 7 UP (or 7-Up) rose to new heights. Bottlers focused on 7 UP because it required less sugar than other soft drinks, and sugar was being rationed for the war effort.

The State of Nevada first legalized gambling in 1931. At that same time, the Hoover Dam was being built and the federal government did not want its workers (who earned 50 cents an hour) to be involved with such diversions, so they built the town of Boulder City to house the dam workers. To this day, Boulder City is the only city in Nevada where gambling is illegal. Hoover Dam is 726 feet tall and 660 feet thick at its base. Enough rock was excavated in its construction to build the Great Wall of China. Contrary to old wives' tales, no workers were buried in the dam's concrete.

In February 1992, Israeli air force reserve major Ishmael Yitzhaki was convicted of stealing a WWII Mustang fighter plane and flying it to Sweden, where he sold it for $331,000. How did he manage it? He removed the plane from the air force museum by saying it needed painting.[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

The disease known as "chicken pox" has nothing to do with poultry. It earned the name because it was originally thought to be a weak strain of smallpox.

Technically, green peppers, zucchini, cucumbers, and tomatoes are all fruits. But don't try telling that to the U.S. Supreme Court. Per the 1893 case Nix v. Heeden, the court decided tomatoes were veggies and therefore subject to the vegetable tariff. The Supreme Court's reasoning? ... Tomatoes have to be vegetables because they're usually served with dinner, not dessert.

Seeking a career in the performing arts, Cirque du Soleil founder Guy Lalibert toured Europe as a folk musician and street performer after quitting college. By the time he returned back home to Canada in 1979, he had learned the art of fire breathing and by 1983, the Quebec government granted him 1.5 million Canadian dollars to host the first Cirque du Soleil production.

I did not know that! Was that part of the decency laws, where they weren't allowed to show 2 people in bed unless both of them had at least one foot on the floor, etc, or do you think it was just that the writers/producers/directors didn't think anybody would be interested in seeing a commode on the big screen? (After all, I'm sure many housewives came to the movie theater, at least in part, as an escape from the daily grind of cooking, cleaning, laundry, etc...As another example, how often did you see anybody cooking in the old classics, rather than eating out, or being served at the dining room table by the butler/maid?
