On the Giza Plateau, Khufu's builders oriented his pyramid almost perfectly north. The largest pyramid ever
built
, it incorporates about 2.3 million stone blocks,
weighing an average of 2.5 to 15 tons each. It is estimated that the
workers would have
had to set a block every two and a half minutes.

The Great Pyramid originally stood 481 feet high complete with its
original casing, but since it lost its top 30 feet, it stands only 451
feet now. It covers about 13 acres. The exterior casing was shining
white limestone, laid from the top downwards. It was largely robbed in
the Middle Ages to build medieval Cairo. Nothing now remains of the
limestone mortuary temple, which was 171 feet by 132 feet, except its
black basalt floor. The complex’s valley temple has disappeared under
the Arab village, though traces of this temple could be seen when new
sewer systems were being laid down.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Along with the pyramid itself, the remains of a magnificent 141-foot
long ship of cedar wood had also been found in a rock-cut pit close to
the south side of the Great Pyramid. A second ship may also rest in a
second sealed pit, though not in as good condition as this first. The
ship was restored over many years, and now lies in a special museum
built near the pyramid itself. The ship may have symbolized the solar
journey of the deceased king with the gods, particularly the sun-god Ra.

This is an alleged tunnel beneath Giza pyramid.
An enormous system of caves, chambers and tunnels lies hidden beneath
the Pyramids of Giza, according to a British explorer who claims to have
found the lost underworld of the pharaohs.

I think it's very interesting, but we may never know for sure what was, or wasn't, beneath the pyramids.

I am off to find our next point of interest in Egypt. Anyone have a suggestion?

For dessert, the Egyptians liked to eat dates. This
is a picture of some real Egyptian dates which were put into somebody's
grave for them to eat in the next world, and which were preserved in
the dry climate for three thousand years until archaeologists dug them
up again.

Archaeologists have also found seeds which show that the Egyptians
grew watermelons, and other kinds of melon.

Egyptian cuisine is based mainly on wheat and barley that is grown along
the banks of River Nile. Bread is the staple diet of Egyptian people.
The pita type bread is either made from whole wheat - aysh baladi, or white flour - aysh shami.
Among beverages, beer is the national drink. Egyptian beer is made from
barley and spices are added for flavor. Egyptian wine making has been
practiced since ancient times. Egyptian wine is made from a variety of
fruits like grapes, dates, pomegranates, plums and palms. Egyptian cuisine uses variety of vegetables, such as molokhiyya
(a spinach-like vegetable), beets, beans, mushrooms, etc. Salads and
non-vegetarian food like fish and meats are also part of their menu. One
of their popular dishes is bean stew falafel with lamb and pigeon.

Rice and bread with vegetables and meat is served at lunch and dinner in Egypt. A specialty Egyptian meal
encompasses delicacies like grilled pigeon stuffed with rice, dry or
deep fried fish, a spicy salad made of tomatoes, cheese, beans, eggs,
potatoes and yogurt. The people of Egypt,
also relish seafood like shrimps, squids and scallops. Garlic and
onions are also used predominantly as ingredients in majority of
Egyptian food recipes. Among desserts, there are pastries, puddings
meshed with honey, pancake called fatir which is stuffed with eggs and apricots, light and gummy ice creams, Umm ali
(pudding), etc. can excite your taste buds. The Egyptian cuisine is
also influenced by cuisines of neighboring Iraq, Greece and Italy.

The Temple of Karnak in Luxor

Post by Breezey Breezey on Mon Aug 30, 2010 9:18 pm

This is interesting, to me. Maybe you will find it interesting too. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
Kind of reminds me of a beautiful oasis.

Karnak is the biggest temple complex in the world, covering an area of 100 hectares. (Does anyone know how that measures up in feet or miles?)
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
I believe this is Hippstyle Hall. Consisting of 134 columns, the Hippostyle Hall was started by Seti I,
but the majority of the construction was done by Ramses II. The center
columns are taller than the others, and the windows would allow light to
come in.

After that, can we check out one or more of these places?

Surely, Ireland is one of the best places in Europe. For those who have not yet visited this beautiful place, there are sights that you should definitey not miss. Below is the list of all those great, must-see places.

Trinity College and Library

Queen Elizabeth founded this place way back in 1592. This place, with its awesome architecture, was once an Augustinian priory that fell victim in the dissolution. But today, it dominates the landscape of the city and is one of the oldest buildings in the area. The Trinity College Library has been home to several manuscripts that number up to a million. One of them is the Book of Kells.

O'Connel Street and the General Post Office

This street has served as Dublin's main artery when traffic is concerned. It is also the widest of all urban streets in the whole of Europe. In its center, various statues and monuments are found here. The huge and impressive houses on the other hand are found at the left and right.

One of the main attractions is the General Post Office, where the 1916 rebellion took place. It was rebuilt after it was shelled by the artillery. In commemoration to its fallen heroes, a bronze statue was built in honor of them.

The National Museums in Dublin

There are two major museums in Dublin. One is the National Museum of Archeology and History. It is found in Kildare Street and it is dedicated to the prehistoric and medieval history of the country. The other one is the National Museum of Decorative Arts and History in Collin Barracks. It is where the various collections of arts are stored. Visitors can have a look at the uniform of Michael Collins he wore when he was shot in the easter Rising.

St. Patrick's Cathedral

This is the largest church in Ireland along with the National Cathedral. Archbishop Comyn founded this place in 1191 and it has been renovated in 1844 and 1869 through the funds provided by Sir Benjamin Lee Guinness. Here, visitors can get a glimpse of the neo-gothic cathedral along with some of its older parts. They can also get to see the graves of Dean Swift and his Stella.

Temple Bar

Before, it was subject to redevelopment and was to be turned into a bus and rail terminal. However, it was spared and was turned into a place of bohemian activity. This is where visitors can see street artists and get a taste of the cuisine and the beers in pubs.

National Gallery

This is located at the center of Dublin, at the Merrion Square West. It was opened way back in 1864. It has exhibited over 500 works of art. Irish artists and portraits have been recently installed in the newly expanded Millenium Wing.

Kilmainham Gaol

One of Europe's most notorious prisons, this place was where the leaders of the 1916 rebellion were executed. Because of the infamy attached to its history, the Kilmainham Gaol has only been looked upon as a republican shrine.

Dublin Castle

This castle was used before as a Viking fortress. It was then renovated and rebuilt. The Royal Chapel is the only one that looks medieval while the administrative establishments around it are provided with a modern style.

Phoenix Park

This is considered as the world's largest parks and this is where you can find the splendid residences of Irish President and the Ambassador of the United States. This is where the cricket and polo fields can be seen.

If you plan to visit this place, be sure that you get a glimpse of the Phoenix statue and the Papal Cross. The same thing for the Wellington Monument an the Magazine Fort on Thomas Hill.

Guinness Storehouse

If you want to see the place where the beers are being brewed, it is best that you go here at the Guinness Storehouse. There you can see the brewing process itself, from the Guinness transportation up to the tour where you get to have a free pint at Gravity-Bar.
